Why Should We Hire You? – An Interview Question

“Why should you hire me? I guess that is a rhetoric right? I mean didn’t you see my CV? And what about my performance? I remember you were nodding throughout. The CEO even gave me an applause, why do you still go ahead to ask me such question?”

My friend, relax, sit down, be humble, and answer the question.

So in my last write-up on interview questions, it was requested I write one on how to answer such a question, that is, “why should we hire you?” A feat, I will attempt to answer.

Mind you there is no one answer that will satisfy this question wherever, or whenever it ask. The answer is dependent on the industry that one is entering and also, based on the line of questioning that one has been exposed to during the interview.

So usually, this question is about one of the last questions that is asked during an interview session.

Most interview experts argue that, this question is not about what you can do for the company, rather, for you to demonstrate your knowledge on what you could benefit from the company and what you the ‘little’ you will contribute. In effect, you must demonstrate what symbiotic relationship you will be offering the company, should they hire you.

Suzy Welch, bestselling management author and CNBC contributor, puts it this way: “Talk about the company, its people, product and processes.”

So there you go on how to answer such a question: it must be an answer that hammers on a SYMBIOTIC relationship! Don’t be so ‘altruistic’ with your answer.

Think of it this way: no matter how badly you need a job, you will not want to be hired in a company that will only let you work, work, work and work without adding any value to you. You will also want something in return…or?

Let’s take an example. Hypothetic job position is Product Engineer in an engineering company.

wy u.jpgInterviewer: Why should we hire you?

Candidate A: I have proven track record and will bring onboard more than relevant skills and experience and I believe I am cut well cut out for this job.

Candidate B: Your value for employee empowerment through continuous learning and your customer-centered approach makes you the difference in the industry. I also believe your culture of innovation in products and processes makes you unique. Furthermore, the position calls for someone who can bring onboard marketing and operations and have a well-designed and simulated product delivered faster, by as much as 3 working days.

The second answer proves that the candidate has been paying attention to the details of the company and not only did he state what he will be getting from the company, but specifically provided what the company will gain from him.

Part of the reasons, your answer must be ‘symbiotic’ and not solely about you is because, you do not know what the other candidates are bringing on board and, more importantly, you will also not want to be offering a generic response like all the rest – be different

In summary, your answer will mean nothing, if it does not liaise with why it is right for the skills you possess, your values and your career path – just merge it!

You can leave a feedback and also other interview questions you may want me to write on during the next piece.

Glad to have you reading.

My name is Kotey.

Good day.
