Bounce Back with Style

bounceback1-1.pngSo some time ago I wrote about Nokia having to fold up because they were not able to compete in an evolving market. They stuck to their ways of doing things and lost a huge potential in the market they had dominance over. They just couldn’t keep up with time.

But in a twist, the company decided to bounce back, adding new features to the most popular mobile phone in the year 2000. With the addition of a camera phone and even longer battery life than current smart phones, people are likely to go back and fall in love with their first love, the Nokia 3310.

Such is with life, you cannot succeed by doing the same thing. You must evolve by reinventing your abilities and qualities to become more competitive in today’s world. You may not get it right when you do, but try again but with a different approach.

As someone once said, it is only a fool who does the same thing at different times, expecting different results under same conditions, only a fool.

My name is Kotey, and even better is to be the evolution of your time.

Good day.

The War on Artificial Intelligence

artifi.jpgWith robots soon taking over jobs around the world, one specific question remain unanswered – how will it affect traditional economic structures and would they lead to the introduction of a universal basic salary?

In 2014, Stephen Hawking, a renowned physicist and cosmologist said, “Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is seen as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This age brings with it the Internet of Things, Large-scale machine learning, Robotics, Natural Language Processing, Neuromorphic computing, and many more. The intelligence of the human race is seeking to satisfy its curiosity by inventing and creating new ways of doing things, and it comes at a cost which may be beneficial…or will it not?

To define AI, Nils J. Nilsson, an American computer scientist and researcher in the discipline of AI, says, “Artificial Intelligence is that activity devoted to making machines intelligent, and intelligence is that quality that enables an entity to function appropriately and with foresight in its environment.”

For the past 60years, mankind has devoted time to make machines more intelligent and there’s no turning back now. In the 1920’s, a science fiction play RUR and written by Czech writer Karel Čapek sort to depict a Robot revolt. There has been many concerns raised about how ‘safe’ mankind can be should he develop machines that could think for themselves and act without supervision. However, safety is another side of the story.

Robots Saving Lives

arti.jpgIn all fields, such as education, agriculture, health, and industry the role of robots and AI cannot be downplayed. Examples include using cutting-edge technology to study particular strains of virus and bacteria to understand their composition; researching into areas that will allow ‘robots’ to operate more precisely on people; employing of drones for easy delivery of products; mechanized farming; using Natural Language Processing to enhance computer communication with people; automated assembly line; driverless cars and many more. In fact, it is projected that in about 15years autonomous transportation will be the norm in a typical North American city.

The examples are countless, but why is man so scared despite this level of improvement in all aspects of life since the birth of AI?

Others tend to argue that we must look at improving the human skill than eliminating it entirely as it is the only thing capable rethinking an event to help prevent a world disaster.

The thing is, if you do not adapt, you won’t survive and if you don’t evolve with the times, you will be left behind. Truth be told, the future cannot be predicted and as statistics show that revenue from AI will more than quadruple in the next decade, every possibility is an eventuality.

As the population of the human race is at its record level ever, and man shows no sign of retreating from reproducing, I am forced to agree with Elon Musk, that we will need a universal basic income in order for people to ‘merely survive’. But then what meaningful lives can they live, if all they get is a stipend to keep them breathing? Will governments and wealthy citizens of the earth be willing to take this task that may become impossible to achieve?

Surely we need an evolution that will help incorporate more of human labour in the affairs of AI until it’s too late.

Problems are Solutions

problem.jpgYou may have heard or perhaps used the app Uber before, as well as the story behind its founding. Permit me to share to those of us who don’t know.

It was a snowy evening in Paris and two friends had difficulty finding a taxi. This inconvenience made them think, why not develop something that people will just tap a button and get a ride? That was all. Why, what were you expecting? That’s the whole story.

Quoting from the Uber website, “What started as an app to request premium black cars in a few metropolitan areas is now changing the logistical fabric of cities around the world. Whether it’s a ride, a sandwich, or a package, we use technology to give people what they want, when they want it.”

You see sey life be very simple? Don’t always think of the problems you face as the work of the devil. Perhaps, it is for you to provide the world with a long-lasting solution. When you’re going through hard times, learn to ask yourself meaningful questions that will help eliminate the problem from occurring in not just your life but also in someone else’s.

My name is Kotey and again I say, problems are just solutions, but then with question marks. All we need to do is to provide the right answers with God’s help. Don’t give up.

Good morning.

Take a Look Back

In life’s journey, we tend to progress from one point to other. It is not a must that we all progress through the storms of life but then as life gives us many hills and valleys that we have to walk through. Some of the hills are so high that we think we have achieved it all and become proud. Also, some the valleys are so low we think God’s hand cannot reach out to us.

In fact, life throws at us all its got. The moment of happiness, sadness, success, failure, and neglect. We have the choice for not to be weakened by it but rather endure and become ‘tough’ to it.

When through all the changing scenes of life you get to the point where Abraham Maslow describes as Self Actualisation, take a look back and see how far you’ve come. There may be someone going through what you’ve been through seeking to give up. Take a chance to encourage the person. But then do not look back only to encourage, but also to see how far you’ve come through abundant grace and hard work. As Daniel Kekeli puts it: “The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come.”

As it is said, the one who forgets where he comes from when he gets to his destination, will certainly at his destination be forgotten at where he comes from. Nonetheless, don’t live life seeking to be remembered, live life knowing your positive impact can not be forgotten.

Relax!

Sometimes the heat gets to us. In the midst of trying, we may end up trying too hard. Our thoughts can become jammed up and we may not  be able to think straight. But all of these can become a burden if we are not in charge of the things that happen in our lives.

We must take charge of the happenings in our lives and not let them take charge of us. We must press towards the mark with utmost confidence. It is good to take a break and observe what we’re in for us to have a new perspective of tackling the problem. Not only will taking a break give you another perspective, but it also renews your strength. Take for instance the case of half-time during a football match. The players come back with renewed strength to play the rest of the game.

Brethren, whether you’re going for an interview, writing an exam, caught in the midst of trouble or even on your wedding day, my brother, relax, take control of the moment and unleash the greatness inside of you. For there are treasures in us, earthen vessels.

My name is Kotey and when the heat tends to get hot, I simply relax for I know the Lord always has the wheel.

Good morning.

Use What You Have

use what u got.jpg

Some ladies tend to take the words in the title of this too seriously, but abeg, I ain’t talking about that extreme use-what-you-have-to-get-what-you-want. Abi you bab?

I once read a book that said “In Africa, they say water is Life…” At first I was like “Ah!..What is the author trying to say”. So I read it again, and again, and again. Then it dawned me. In fact, I have used this expression before. Why should I be ‘put off’ because the tone (though it was on a lighter note) in which somebody uses it suggests that certain things which are a basic necessity in their part of the world is like guarded shrine down here.

The book was actually written by one of the CEO’s of one of the world’s largest NGOs. He was actually reporting on some of the projects they have  undertaken in Africa and some of the challenges they encounter, including Ghana. He pointed out that despite the rich resources on the continent many people are still thirsty, in the abundance of water.

The point I am driving at is, it’s not good enough to have something without possessing it. It’s not good enough to have a skill without using it. In effect, no matter how good you think you are or can be, you can not be of benefit to anyone, not even yourself, if you don’t work with what you have. Be it your leadership  skill, your ability to settle disputes, your ability to teach, or even your ability to encourage. Use what you have and it is only through that you can develop.

An Afican Tale (Verse 5)

Recap of the previous Verses: King Kofi of the kingdom of Alata Samina has continued the tradition of allowing warriors to battle for the Princess’s hand in marriage. He doesn’t know his daughter has a lover, a mad lover. The Oracle, Olambila, has spoken that she should be offered as a sacrifice or the kingdom will risk the death of the king and the enslavement of the queen. We continue…

Messenger: Hear me…[laughs]….I say, hear me…Olambila is not a god…but you have an option to save yourselves. Be wise King Kofi, be wise and do the right thing. Hard things are hard….but then what else can they be?

Townspeople begin to chatter among themselves. King Kofi had been quiet all this while with his wife wailing on his shoulder.

King Kofi [gestures to body guards]: Bring me that messenger’s head on that rod of hers.

Bodyguards charge on her to hold her captive, but she vanishes into thin air making the villagers scatter in all possible directions.

King Kofi [furiously fuming]: Find me that messenger! I said find her! Today we shall see if it the gods can take away the earth from the feet of the lion that chases the innocent sheep. Find her and bring me her head on that rod of hers.

Queen Ojuola: Your Highness please let her be. The gods are not to be angered. Let alone Olambila, the Oracle..

King Kofi [cutting her off]: Today I will anger them. In fact I will find them and then catch them, and then bring them here to fight for the princess.

Queen Ojuola: Please watch how you speak Your Highness, the gods take offense with that tone.

King Kofi: Oh so now you’re the official mouthpiece for the gods eh? Or have they possessed you?

Narrator: But the foolish king had been blinded by love. Blinded so much that he had failed to see the Princess was not in their midst all this while. Now he stands, fuming and ranting like a mad duck fighting with chickens over meat. If only he knew his daughter is at the edge of the evil forest plucking wild berries with the insane Kofi Giddy as the two love birds disturbing the leaves and tickling the gods. But the worse is yet to happen.

To be continued…
